Republicans almost killed me—Cher

Quotes and video from Cher, singer and actress, from President Obama’s inaugural ball

In an interview with cnsnews.com, Cher makes the following statements on President Obama, and the Republican party:

I just think he’s totally the right person at this time in our history.  He brings something more in his spirit than maybe another president could be even with the same intelligence. There’s something about him that brings more with his spirit, and that’s what Americans need right now. Republicans almost killed me. ... You know what? I have so – I try to be charitable and there are some really good Republicans, but I just don’t understand how anyone would want to be a Republican. I just can’t figure it. I don’t understand,” she said. “If you’re poor, if you’re any kind of minority – gay, black, Latino, anything. If you’re not a rich – I don’t know. If you’re not a rich born-again-Christian, I don’t get it.

--Cher

Somali pirates are a ‘Voluntary Coast Guard’?

Some things are just beyond parody, such as Al Sharpton telling his audience that the Somali pirates, who have been seizing ships and are now promising to kill any Americans that they take captive, are ‘voluntary coast guard’ for Somalia.

When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than …

A warning about future terrorist attacks on the United States of America, from former Vice President Dick Cheney

When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,
-- Dick Cheney, former Vice President of the United States of America

You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom …

“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

-- Dr. Adrian Rogers *1931-2005)

A scenario where there’s no more agriculture in California …

An alarmist warning on global climate change (formerly known as as global warming) from Steven Chu, President Obama’s energy secretary, who’s an expert on physics.

I don’t think the American public has gripped in its gut what could happen.  We’re looking at a scenario where there’s no more agriculture in California.  I don’t actually see how they can keep their cities going.
-- Steven Chu, energy secretary, 2/4/2009

If you release the hard-core Al Qaeda terrorists that are held at Guantanamo…

Dick Cheney gives a sobering warning about the consequences of releasing the detainees from the federal facility at Guantanamo

If you release the hard-core Al Qaeda terrorists that are held at Guantanamo, I think they go back into the business of trying to kill more Americans and mount further mass-casualty attacks,” he said. “If you turn ’em loose and they go kill more Americans, who’s responsible for that?

If it hadn’t been for what we did …

Former Vice President Dick Cheney, defending the Bush Administration’s war on terror

If it hadn’t been for what we did — with respect to the terrorist surveillance program, or enhanced interrogation techniques for high-value detainees, the Patriot Act, and so forth — then we would have been attacked again.  Those policies we put in place, in my opinion, were absolutely crucial to getting us through the last seven-plus years without a major-casualty attack on the U.S.
-- former Vice President Dick Cheney

Socialism only works in two places

A very true observation on Socialism, by the Great Communicator, Ronald Reagan

Socialism only works in two places: Heaven where they don’t need it and hell where they already have it.

Men who look upon themselves as born to reign, and others to obey …

From Thomas Paine, a very true observation about the mindset of the self-proclaimed ‘intelligensia’

Men who look upon themselves as born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.

- Thomas Paine

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism

An excellent comment on "hyphenated Americanism" by former President Teddy Roosevelt

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all… The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic… There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
—Teddy Roosevelt

What then is the American, this new man?

An excellent quote, answering the question, "What is an American?"

“What then is the American, this new man?” He answered: “He is an American, who, leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys, and the new rank he holds. He has become an American by being received in the broad lap of our great Alma Mater. Here individuals of all races are melted into a new race of man, whose labors and posterity will one day cause great changes in the world. Americans are the western pilgrims.”

--J. Hector St. John De Crevecoeur (Letters from an American Farmer)

I like a little rebellion now and then

Thomas Jefferson, with a timely comment on the spirit of resistance to government

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable, on certain occasions, that I wish it to always be kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all.

I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere.
Thomas Jefferson – 1787
